1968 Camaro Z28 DZ302 “Generation 1” Z28 Camaros (1967-1968) are unique in their styling. Many regard them as rather “Italianesque”. Over 455,000 were built; but, of all the variations, the Z28 is the most famous, rarest (approx. 7,600 built). The Z28 was designed as a true race car; available directly off the showroom floor at your local Chevy dealer (if you had $3,800 dollars in your pocket). The Z28 was designed to compete in Trans-Am road racing. Its very small 302 cu.in. V-8 is the “heart” of the model. It has many special components unique to the 302. The “smallish” 302 “lives” on RPM; and it doesn't start running really well until 5000 RPM on up. Dyno tests of the period give it approximately 400HP at 7000 Rpm. The car shown here is a true “bare-bones” race car-no power accessories. The Z28 concept was developed by Roger Penske, and his engineers. Driven by the great Mark Donohue, it captured Trans-Am titles in 1968 and 1969. After 50 years, few original, matching numbers Z28's remain. Originally raced, then restored this Camaro is documented to the hilt with decoding data and documentation that fills two binders. Includes codes, casting numbers, part numbers, date codes and history. 13,000 original miles.
